Commondale Wool Workshop

Lesley, Mary and Val form the backbone of the Commendable Wool Workshop (CWW), which is part of a non-profit making organisation, "Beyond Boundaries", that enables people with disabilities (although open to able-bodied people too) to develop their interests and skills in a wide variety of ways, such as helping on the farm, arts and crafts, with GCF members Lesley, Mary, Helen, and Linda involved in the art group, sports and even archaeology.  Beyond Boundaries is run from Fowl Green Farm in Commondale, which is where the inspiration and vision for the originated.

The CWW workers use wool which has been shorn from the sheep on the farm, wash it, card it, taking it from a tangled mess to a spin-able product and then spin the wool themselves.  After that the wool is dyed and finally it is ready to be used.  The workers have the satisfaction of seeing the whole process through from sheep to garment.  It's not just knitting and crochet, there are skilled needle felters too.

Through the summer season the group attends local Country Shows displaying and selling their crafts, they have attracted considerable attention, with some shows asking them to attend.  While displaying their wares, they also demonstrate the various process stages and skills required to enable people to try themselves.  All the money raised through these activities goes to Beyond Boundaries, enabling disadvantaged people, of all ages, to extend their skills and lives, building their confidence and self esteem.

This year CWW won a cup and award for the Best Stall at Bilsdale Show.  They have also been highly commended at Farndale, and were at 'Parkfest' at Danby Lodge.

If you would like to see what goes on firsthand, you are very welcome to call in at The Old Cart Shed, Fowl Green Farm, Commondale, just next to the station, on a Thursday, any time between 09.30 - 15.30 with Tea and Coffee readily available.

Lindsey's farewell!

Watch this space for our next adventure!

31 March 2012 : Following on from the March heatwave, things didn't look too promising on setting off from a drizzly Guisborough . . . . but the sun shone on us as we set off for a lovely Spring walk from Hawnby!

29 December 2011 : Slightly weighed down by the excesses of Christmas, we set off from Guisborough Church to do a lovely circuit of Guisborough Woods. Our refreshments stop seemed mainly to consist of Christmas cake, the calories of which were completely used up by the time we reached a very windy Highcliffe Nab. We finished up in the Voyager for a fellowship tea.
